Tropical Storm Fey Update
Tropical Storm Fay has come ashore at Cape Romano in South Florida.

Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee and Desoto counties are still under a Tropical Storm Warning.  The Tampa Bay area is now without warnings. However, that does not mean that the area will not receive ample amounts of rain or wind.

Idiot Kite Surfer

(firstcoastnews.com)- Rather than seek shelter, a kite surfer in South Florida thought he would take on Tropical Storm Fay and her strong winds. Fay won.

He was harnessed to his sail Monday afternoon when the winds picked him up and slammed him on the beach.

Then, he was dragged across the sand, lifted back up and blown across the street into a building.

Witnesses ran to help him as he laid on the ground in pain. The kite surfer was taken to the hospital. No word yet on his condition.

Calling All Iraq Veterans
(CNN.com)-An open casting call for "All My Children" is far from business as usual: The soap opera is seeking an Iraq war veteran to play an injured veteran.

The ABC daytime show has created a romantic story line to combine entertainment and a window into the challenges faced after combat, said executive producer Julie Hanan Carruthers.

"All My Children" has launched a broad search to fill the role, inviting veterans to contact the show's New York casting director. The series also is working with a veterans' support group, USA Cares, as well as the military.

"It will make it such a heightened experience for the audience and for us ... to cast a real-life soldier, a veteran, and bring him into our created drama," Carruthers said.

The veteran-turned-actor will play the character of Brot, a key figure in a plot that's already under way and involves a visitor to fictional Pine Valley, Army Lt. Taylor Thompson (Beth Ehlers). More...

Beijing Day 11 Update

Gymnastics

China's He Kexin has won a tiebreaker over all-around champion Nastia Liukin of the United States for the uneven bars gold medal Monday at the Beijing Olympics.

Both scored 16.725, but He got the nod.

He, at the center of an age-eligibility controversy throughout the games — was fast and furious on the bars. Her twists and flips went by in the blink of an eye, and she won by about that short a margin.

Liukin, who sat stone-faced for much of the competition, now has four medals, two of them silver.

Monday's bronze went to Yang Yilin, her third medal, including bronze in the all-around.

U.S.
women have won six medals here; China's women have five, including team gold.

Tonight is Shawn Johnson’s last chance to win a gold medal as the individual beam competition kicks off.

Track and Field

It started with Stephanie Brown-Trafton's gold medal in the women's discus, continued with a sweep in the men's 400-meter hurdles and came to a successful conclusion with Jenn Stuczynski's silver medal in the women's pole vault.

After being shut out of the medals in Olympic track and field competition on Sullen Sunday, the U.S. team rebounded with five on Merry Monday at the Bird's Nest.

Led by 2000 Olympic gold medalist Angelo Taylor, the Americans were looking for a sweep in the 400 hurdles and got it. Taylor was first across the finish line in 47.25 seconds followed by Kerron Clement in 47.98 and Bershawn Jackson in 48.08.

It was the first sweep by American men in the 400 hurdles since 1960. (sfgate.com)

Local Olympians Going for the Gold
Track and Field
(tbo.com)- Despite suffering the effects of the flu, Tampa's Damu Cherry is one step away from an Olympic medal after reaching the finals of the women's 100-meter hurdles in Beijing.

Cherry, a Leto High and University of South Florida graduate making her Olympic Games debut at age 30, earned her spot in the title race by winning her semifinals heat Monday night at the National Stadium, aka "The Bird's Nest."

Diving
(tbo.com)- Brandon diver Chris Colwill has advanced to the semifinals of the men's 3-meter springboard competition at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Colwill, a Tampa Prep and University of Georgia product, earned his spot in the semifinals by placing seventh in Monday's opening round.

Last week, Colwill and dive partner Jevon Tarantino placed fourth in the 3-meter synchronized springboard, one spot away from the medals podium.

According to Colwill's father, Chuck Colwill, who attended Monday's event at the National Aquatics Center in Beijing, Chris Colwill's performance was "nothing flashy but very consistent." More...

Michael Phelps Mania

Michael Phelps' 8 gold medals could net him $100 million in endorsement deals. His agent says he has been fielding 50 calls a day since the games began. Phelps could sign a deal worth $50 million if he leaves Speedo for Nike. His autograph value went from being worth $25 before the Olympics to $1,000. Speedo recently wrote Michael a $1 million bonus check for winning 8 gold medals.

Is Phelps Single?

(telegraph.co.uk)- Two girls have recently been linked with Beijing's eight-time gold medalist: US swimmer Amanda Beard and British model Lily Donaldson.

Beard held the Olympic record for women's 200 metres breaststroke after her win in Athens, but failed to reach the final in Beijing.

She recently posed nude for an anti-fur ad campaign by using the Olympics for maximum exposure. Like US tennis player Ashley Harkleroad, Beard has also posed nude for Playboy.

21-year-old Donaldson is the surprise of the two candidates. She is regarded as one of the top models in the world, while she replaced Kate Moss as one of the faces of Burberry.

Phelps is staying mum on the girlfriend questions.

(AP)- Arava the disabled turtle is using her new set of wheels to get around in more ways than one.

Officials at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo say the 10-year-old spurred tortoise has begun mating since being fitted with a custom skateboard to overcome paralysis of her hind legs.

The 55-pound turtle is unable to move herself forward with her front legs alone. So the zoo's staff built her a metal board with two wheels that can be strapped to her stomach.

Arava arrived in Jerusalem a few months ago from a petting zoo in southern Israel with the unexplained handicap, and found no reptile romance. More...

Happy News

Christina Applegate says she has a clean bill of health after undergoing treatment for breast cancer. "I'm clear," Applegate tells ABC News' "Good Morning America" in an interview airing today. "Absolutely 100 percent clear and clean. It did not spread. They got everything out, so I'm definitely not going to die from breast cancer."

The Stones Bring Man Out of a Coma
The Rolling Stones have been hailed unlikely life-savers after waking a British fan from a coma. Sam Carter lost consciousness after contracting severe anemia but came to when his favorite Stones track, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" was blasted into his ears.

Ironically, the single was the first the retired baker bought when he was a teenager in 1965.

Carter, from Stoke, England, was given just a 30 percent survival rate by doctors, who advised his wife Eva to play his favorite track through headphones strapped to her husband's head.

Carter says, "I suddenly had a burst of energy and knew I had a lot more life left in me and that's when I woke up - to the sound of the first song I ever bought. I would love to thank Mick (Jagger) and the rest of the Stones personally - I feel they really did help wake me from my coma."

Maternity Clothes That are Fierce

Christian Siriano is launching a maternity collection. Though he's showing his regular collection on September 11 during Fashion Week, he's already got a full maternity line under his belt for spring 2009. Beijing Day 10 Update
Swimming
This weekend Michael Phelps won his 8th gold medal, and he broke Mark Spitz's record. He has 14 total gold medals, and that makes him the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time.

Darra Torres said it best, " You don't put an age limit on your dreams."

The U.S. Swimmer is 41 years young, and she's also the first swimmer from the United States to compete in five Olympics (1984, 1988, 1992, 2000, and 2008).

She's also the first woman in history to swim in the Olympics past the age of 40 and the oldest swimmer to win an Olympic silver medal.

On Saturday, she was edged out of Olympic gold in the 50-meter freestyle by one hundredth of a second. The winner, Britta Steffen of Germany, is 24-years old.

Gymnastics
Gymnast, Shawn Johnson settled for a silver medal and Nastia Liukin got the bronze in the individual floor exercise competition. Romania's Sandra Izbasa took the gold.

Local Sailor Wins Silver
While most Pinellas County residents were sleeping early Sunday morning, Zach Railey was racing his way to a silver medal in the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Railey came in second in the Finn class behind sailor Ben Ainslie, 31, of Great Britain, who is now a three-time Olympic gold medalist. Good job!

Bigfoot Hoax

Results from tests on genetic material from alleged remains of one of the mythical half-ape and half-human creatures, made public at a news conference on Friday held after the claimed discovery swept the Internet, failed to prove its existence.

Its spread was fueled by a photograph of a hairy heap, bearing a close resemblance to a shaggy full-body gorilla costume, stuffed into a container resembling a refrigerator.

One of the two samples of DNA said to prove the existence of the Bigfoot came from a human and the other was 96 percent from an opossum, according to Curt Nelson, a scientist at the University of Minnesota who performed the DNA analysis.

Bigfoot creatures are said to live in the forests of the U.S. Pacific Northwest. An opossum is a marsupial about the size of a house cat.

Results of the DNA tests were revealed in an e-mail from Nelson and distributed at the Palo Alto, California, news conference held by Tom Biscardi, host of a weekly online radio show about the Bigfoot.

"I Didn't Want to Waist Her Time"
(people.com)- Though John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston were decidedly mum about their romance, the singer is opening up about their breakup.

"There's no lying, there's no cheating, there's no nothing," Mayer told reporters Saturday about his split with Aniston after working out at an Equinox Gym in New York's SoHo neighborhood.

If anything Mayer had only praise for his ex, saying: "Jennifer Aniston is the smartest, most sophisticated person I think I have ever met."

So what went wrong? "People are different, people have different chemistry," said Mayer, who appeared emotional, nervous and sad. "I ended a relationship to be alone, because I don't want to waste somebody's time if something's not right."

Sources confirmed that the duo, whose whirlwind romance began in April, mutually decided to split earlier this week.

Since the breakup, Aniston and Mayer have settled into their separate lives on different sides of the country.

Wedding Bells
Ellen and Portia have tied the knot.

DeGeneres and de Rossi were married Saturday evening at their home in Los Angeles.

DeGeneres, 50, and de Rossi, 35, both wore Zac Posen and exchanged rings by
Neil Lane during the Saturday ceremony. Their big day also featured arrangements by L.A. florist Mark's Garden.

The intimate ceremony was attended by 19 guests, including DeGeneres's mom Betty and de Rossi's mother Margaret Rogers, who witnessed the couple exchange handwritten vows.

Avril Too Sexy?
(AP)-Malaysia's Islamic opposition party has urged the government to cancel a concert by Avril Lavigne, saying the Canadian singer's on-stage moves are "too sexy," an official said Monday.

Lavigne plans to start her month long Asia tour with a performance in Kuala Lumpur on Aug. 29.

The youth wing of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party said Lavigne's concert would promote wrong values ahead of Malaysia's Aug. 31 independence day.

"It is considered too sexy for us. ... It's not good for viewers in Malaysia," said Kamarulzaman Mohamed, a party official. "We don't want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artists, artists that are good role models."

Madonna is 50
Madonna and hubby Guy Ritchie were seen making their way out of the Queen of Pop's 50th birthday celebration, Saturday in London.

Guy is said to have commissioned top graffiti artist Banksy to create a $900,000 portrait of the M to mark her milestone birthday.

The Super Termite!
(tampabays10.com)- Eating up to a pound of wood each day, they're among every home owner's worst fears.

"They can do some severe damage without being seen. They come up behind walls, and when we see them the damage has already been done," says Sam Frontera, a termite expert with Terminix Pest Control.

Now a new larger type of termite is on the hunt in Pinellas County.

"What makes them different is they grow rapidly their colonies get very, very large," Frontera says.

The Formosan termite is a non native species from the Pacific, known to eat its way through not only wood, but even asphalt and soft medals like lead and copper.

New Program to Jump Start Economy
(tampabays10.com)- Governor Charlie Crist rolled out his plan to stimulate Florida's economy. It's called: Accelerate Florida.

Crist hopes to expedite road and building construction projects among other things. He specifically pointed out southwest Florida's two-lane, I-75 expansion, which he hopes to complete ahead of schedule.

"The point is we gotta accelerate, we gotta work harder, we gotta do better, we gotta do it faster, it's gotta be safe and we all understand that... but it has to be done in a much more rapid fashion," said Crist.

Governor Crist met with business leaders and department secretaries to find ways to eliminate the "red tape" and get the ball rolling. The plan is to use nearly $30 billion that's been collected over the years for projects--that have already been started--and get them done faster than planned. More...

Back to School: Staying Safe
(tampabays10.com)- Pinellas school bus drivers are on the road again; it's their first day back to work. Bus drivers are doing dry runs of their new routes.

Terry Bishop has been on the job for 5 years and says he likes his job, "You're picking up 50 to 60 kids to get to school on time take pride in that as a bus driver."

Safety is Bishop's top concern before heading out he checks his bus it is part of his safety protocol. Bishop says students should have one too when at their bus stop.

"Make sure they stay back from the curb. They should stay at least 20 feet back from the street," says Bishop.

Bishop adds students should not run to meet the bus, but wait for the bus lights to come on and the bus to stop and doors to open before trying to board the bus.

Bishop says students should arrive 10 minutes early, especially the first week when delays are common. The district will run about 700 buses carrying around 46,000 students. CLICK HERE to read more.

Unsure of Your Child's Bus Stop?
(tbo.com)- Hillsborough County parents can call a school transportation hot line from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. today to learn the location of their child's bus stop before the school year begins Monday. The school district hot line number is (813) 982-5500.

Because of a power outage and changes in busing schedules, thousands of families had not received written notices of their bus stops earlier this week.

In 2007-08, the school district began reorganizing its transportation department to cut down on late buses and a chronic need for drivers.

The families affected this year include those living in West Tampa, northwest Hillsborough, and the area around Chamberlain and Hillsborough High schools. More...

Feel Good Story of the Day
(tbo.com)- Just in time for the new school year, 34 youngsters living at Metropolitan Ministries received free makeovers this week.

Courtesy of Saks Fifth Avenue Salon and Spa and the Tampa Yankees, there also were manicures and goody bags filled with hair ties, manicure sets and style products. Lunch was provided by Chick-fil-A.

For 10 years, Saks has hosted the back-to-school makeovers, first at Metropolitan Ministries, 2002 N. Florida Ave., and for the past two years at WestShore Plaza.

"The salon closes for two hours and we have a ball," said Michael Noriega, director of Saks' hair department.

Stylist Charmagne Quin brought the program to Saks and coordinated 25 volunteers for Wednesday's event. "Fashion is such a big deal for the kids," Quin said. "They need that one-up. Even if it's just a haircut, sometimes that is all it takes." More...

Parents Beware
(guardian.co.uk)- Children who cannot afford the latest brands and fashions face bullying or exclusion by their peers, teachers warned yesterday. A desire to fit in plays a huge role in the products children want to own, a poll by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) found. Almost half of the teachers questioned said young people who cannot afford the fashionable items owned by their friends have been excluded, isolated or bullied as a result.

Andy Cranham, a teacher at City of Bristol College said: "The need to belong in groups is paramount to young learners and exclusion is something they see as the end of the world."

Dr Mary Bousted, ATL general secretary said: "Bullying of this kind can be quite insidious: it can just be a look that a child is given. Children feel under immense pressure to look right and having the key brands is part of that." CLICK HERE to learn more about this.

Beijing Day 7 Update:
This is shaping up to be a good Olympics for Team USA. They have a total of 44 medals, 27 of them coming from the swimming competitions, so far and another week to go.

In swimming, Phelps blew away the field in the 200m IM, leading in all four legs and extending it on the freestyle lap to finish with a world-record time of 1:54.23 for his sixth gold medal of the Beijing Olympics. Ryan Lochte won the silver. Lochte also took home the gold medal in the 200m backstroke, with his USA teammate, Aaron Peirsol taking the silver. Rebecca Soni kept the USA tradition going by snagging the coveted 200m breaststroke gold medal.

In gymnastics, Team USA took both the gold and silver medals, ending China's grip on gold medals in the competition. Nastia Liukin gave a nearly perfect performance to win the gold. And defending world champion, Shawn Johnson was right behind her winning the silver medal.

Team USA Stud of the Day
Ryan Lochte's eight trips up and down the pool at the National Aquatic Center Friday morning resulted in two trips up and down the Olympic medal stand.

Swimming two races just 27 minutes apart, the former University of Florida All-American proved he was up to the endurance challenge, winning gold and bronze medals.

He won the gold medal for the 200-meter backstroke with a world-record time of 1:53.94. It was his first individual gold Olympic medal.

"I can't even put it into words," he said. "I touched the wall and was like, 'Thank you! Finally!' It felt good the whole way." (source: usatoday.com)

Lochte has aways been in best friend, Michael Phelps' shadow, but he has finally emerged as world-class swimmer.

Olympic Scandal
(espn.com)- Just nine months before the Beijing Olympics, the Chinese government's news agency, Xinhua, reported that gymnast He Kexin was 13, which would have made her ineligible to be on the team that won a gold medal this week.

In its report Nov. 3, Xinhua identified He as one of "10 big new stars" who made a splash at China's Cities Games. It gave her age as 13 and reported that she beat Yang Yilin on the uneven bars at those games. In the final, "this little girl" pulled off a difficult release move on the bars known as the Li Na, named for another Chinese gymnast, Xinhua said in the report, which appeared on one of its Web sites, www.hb.xinhuanet.com

The Associated Press found the Xinhua report on the site Thursday morning and saved a copy of the page. Later that afternoon, the Web site was still working but the page was no longer accessible. Sports editors at the state-run news agency would not comment for publication.

If the age reported by Xinhua was correct, that would have meant He was too young to be on the Chinese team that beat the United States on Wednesday and clinched China's first women's team Olympic gold in gymnastics. She is also a favorite for gold in Monday's uneven bars final.

Yang was also on Wednesday's winning team. Questions have also been raised about her age and that of a third team member, Jiang Yuyuan.

Gymnasts have to be 16 during the Olympic year to be eligible for the Games. He's birthday is listed as Jan. 1, 1992.

Chinese authorities insist that all three are old enough to compete. He herself told reporters after Wednesday's final that "my real age is 16. I don't pay any attention to what everyone says." CLICK HERE to read more.

Wrestler Pitches a Hissy Fit
(nbcolympics.com)- A Swedish wrestler who dropped his bronze medal in disgust could face sanctions from the International Olympic Committee.

The IOC said Friday it had opened a disciplinary investigation into the actions of Ara Abrahamian, who lost to gold-medalist Andrea Minguzzi of Italy in the semifinals of the men's 84kg Greco-Roman event.

During the medal ceremony Abrahamian took the bronze from around his neck and, in disgust, dropped it on the mat as he walked away. More...

The Monkey-Pig?!
(ananova.com)- Villagers were shocked after a monkey-like piglet was born in China.

Curious locals flocked to the home of owner Feng Changlin after news of the piglet spread in Fengzhang village, Xiping township.

"It's hideous. No one will be willing to buy it, and it scares the family to even look at it!" Feng told Oriental Today.

He says the piglet looks just like a monkey, with two thin lips, a small nose and two big eyes. Its rear legs are also much longer than its forelegs, causing it to jump instead of walk.

Feng's wife said the monkey-faced piglet was one of five newborns of a sow which the family had raised for nine years. For more, CLICK HERE.

Hogan Divorce
Legal motions in the divorce of celebrity wrestler Hulk Hogan and his estranged wife continued in a Clearwater court on Thursday.

Wednesday's hearing focused on a dispute over a multimillion-dollar condo in Las Vegas the couple had agreed to buy three years ago.

The judge ruled Thursday the 54-year-old Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, doesn't have to buy the condo. His wife, Linda, wanted to put the rest of the money down on the property.

The ruling means the couple will lose their $840,000 deposit.
(source: baynews9.com)

Linda also scored as the judge ruled that Hulk will have to pay her $40,000 a month for living expenses starting September 1st. Linda will also have use of the couple's house in Belleair Bluffs while Hogan will have use of their Clearwater condo. Hulk will also have to pay all of Linda's utilities, water, phone, and sewer services fees and her household help.

Trump to the Rescue!
(AP)- Donald Trump will soon be Ed McMahon's landlord.

Trump announced Thursday he would save the television personality's Beverly Hills mansion from foreclosure by buying it for an undisclosed amount and leasing it to McMahon.

The developer told the Los Angeles Times he doesn't know McMahon personally, but acted out of compassion because helping out "would be an honor."

McMahon, 85, who was Johnny Carson's sidekick on the "Tonight" show for three decades, has not worked for about 18 months because of a neck injury. He defaulted on $4.8 million in mortgage loans with Countrywide Financial Corp.

Harry Potter Fans Must be Bummed
"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," the sixth installment in the blockbuster film franchise about boy wizard Harry, is moving from its planned Nov. 21 release to July 17, 2009, distributor Warner Bros. said Thursday.

The move was made to take advantage of an open weekend in Hollywood's busy summer season, said Alan Horn, Warner Bros. president and chief operating officer. The film had been on schedule, and the change was not due to any production snags, he said.

This is Unheard of in Hollywood!

Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law are donating their paychecks from The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus to Heath Ledger's daughter, Matilda. All three took over for the late actor following his untimely death. Director Terry Gilliam says, "The three actors were totally heroic coming in. ' They came; they did the work; they allowed the movie to be finished; they didn't take money–the money goes to Heath's daughter. That's extraordinary! And wonderful."

Weekend Wedding?

The rumor around Hollywood is that Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi will wed this weekend in California. A small group of family and friends is expected to attend.
